Export your data
Export your vault as JSON (complete, and Remem can import it back) or CSV, download what the server holds, and know what each file leaves out.

Exports are made in the Mac app. The extension and the remem command can’t export. An export is not encrypted; if what you want is a copy to keep, make an encrypted backup instead.
Export your vault
- Open Settings → Export vault.
- Select Export JSON or Export CSV, and confirm with Touch ID or your Mac password.
- The file is saved to Downloads as
remem-export-YYYY-MM-DD.jsonor.csv. An existing file is never replaced: a second export the same day gets “ (2)” added to its name.
Exports are not encrypted
Anyone who opens the file reads every password in it. Keep it on encrypted storage, never in email or an unencrypted cloud folder, and delete it, then empty the Trash, when you are done.
Items in the Trash and deleted items are left out.
JSON or CSV?
| Format | Contains | Can Remem import it? |
|---|---|---|
| JSON | Every field, note, tag, imported folder, favourite, logo and history entry. Groups you made on this Mac aren’t included. | Yes, whole. Settings → Import passwords brings it back into this vault or a new one. |
| CSV | Each item’s title, template, username, password, first website, one-time code, notes, tags, imported folder, and a card’s number, expiry and security code. It loses custom fields, extra website addresses, most identity fields, SSH keys, API-key details, a card’s cardholder, PIN and billing address, password history, favourites and pictures. The password column is left empty for SSH keys and cards. A private key is left out of every column wherever it was stored. | Yes, but only what the CSV holds. Other password managers can usually read it. |
The CSV’s columns are:
title,template,username,password,url,totp,notes,tags,collection,card_number,card_expiry,card_cvvTwo things in the CSV differ from your vault on purpose:
- Private keys are left out. That covers PEM and OpenSSH keys, PGP private key blocks and PuTTY key files. Notes that contain one are replaced with “[Left out of this CSV: these notes contain a private key. The JSON export and an encrypted backup keep them.]”. Anything else in your notes, a password included, is exported as you typed it.
- Formula-like text gets a leading apostrophe. In the title, username, website, notes, tags and folder columns, a value starting with
=,+,-,@, a tab or a carriage return gets a'in front, so a spreadsheet shows it as text instead of running it. Spreadsheets hide the apostrophe; Remem’s own CSV import keeps it, so=foocomes back as'=foo. Passwords, one-time codes and card numbers, expiry dates and security codes are never changed.
Use JSON to move to another Remem vault; see Import from another password manager. Use CSV to move to another app.
Download what the server holds
- Open Settings → Account. This section only appears when your vault syncs.
- Under Your data on the server, select Export server data and confirm.
You get remem-vault-export-YYYY-MM-DD.json: your account record, devices, session times and your items, still encrypted. It’s there for your data-protection rights. It can’t be read without your keys, and it can’t be imported anywhere.
Download your website data
On your account page, under Your data, select Download your data. It is a JSON file with your website account, waitlist status, preferences, consents and sessions.
