How can we help?
Step-by-step guides for Remem’s private alpha: the Mac app, the browser extension for Chromium and Firefox, and the remem command on macOS.
Start here
- Create your vault and save your Emergency KitSet up Remem step by step, and keep the Emergency Kit safe: it is shown once, and without it nobody can get you back in.
- Emergency Kit best practicesWhat the kit is, where to keep it, whether to write your master password on it, and how to make a new copy of your Secret Key.
- Install and use the browser extensionInstall the extension in Chrome, Edge, Brave, Arc or Firefox, connect it to your vault with a pairing code, and fill logins and codes.
- Import from another password managerBring back a Remem JSON export whole, or bring passwords, cards and notes across from a CSV or Bitwarden JSON export, and 2FA codes from another authenticator.
- Lost your master password, Secret Key or deviceWhat can and can’t be recovered, case by case, and what to do next. There is no account recovery and no password reset.
- Back up your vaultSave a passphrase-encrypted backup from Settings, keep it off your Mac, and restore it into any vault. For a This Device Only vault it is the only copy that survives losing the Mac.
Getting started
What Remem is, installing it, and creating your vault.
- What Remem isAn end-to-end-encrypted vault for passwords, 2FA codes and developer secrets, in private alpha for macOS.
- Join the waitlist and use your invite codeRemem Cloud is invite-only during the alpha. How the waitlist works, where your invite appears and how to use it.
- Install the Mac appDownload Remem for macOS from your account page, open it for the first time, and add the remem command if you want it.
- Choose where your vault livesRemem Cloud, your own server, or this device only: what each one means, and what you give up with each.
- Create your vault and save your Emergency KitSet up Remem step by step, and keep the Emergency Kit safe: it is shown once, and without it nobody can get you back in.
Using Remem
Items and 2FA codes, the quick panel, the browser extension and the terminal.
- Add logins, codes and other secretsCreate items from templates, scan a 2FA QR code off your screen, generate strong passwords, and add any field you need.
- Favourites, groups, history and the TrashKeep a large vault tidy, get back an old password, and understand what deleting an item does.
- The quick panel and the screen-edge handleCopy a code or password without opening the main window, from the menu bar or a small handle at the edge of the screen.
- Install and use the browser extensionInstall the extension in Chrome, Edge, Brave, Arc or Firefox, connect it to your vault with a pairing code, and fill logins and codes.
- The remem command-line toolGive secrets to one program at a time with remem run, use vault references, sign in over SSH and let git ask Remem for credentials.
- Security review: weak, reused and old passwordsFind the passwords worth changing first. The check runs on your Mac and sends nothing anywhere.
Devices and sync
Adding and removing devices, and fixing sync.
- Set up a second deviceAdd another Mac to a vault that syncs through Remem Cloud or your own server, using your Emergency Kit and master password.
- Remove a deviceSign a lost, sold or old device out of your vault, and what that does and doesn’t do to the copy on it.
- Sync isn’t workingRead the sync status, fix an expired session or a removed device, and understand conflicts, limits and server addresses.
Your data
What we can see, where it is stored, and moving it in and out.
- What we can and cannot seeYour vault is encrypted before it leaves your device. Here is exactly what a sync server, and Cloudflare, can still see.
- Where your data is storedWhat is kept on your Mac, in your Keychain, and on the server for each storage choice. Remem Cloud’s storage is set up in the EU.
- Export your dataExport your vault as JSON (complete, and Remem can import it back) or CSV, download what the server holds, and know what each file leaves out.
- Import from another password managerBring back a Remem JSON export whole, or bring passwords, cards and notes across from a CSV or Bitwarden JSON export, and 2FA codes from another authenticator.
- Move to another server or storage modeMove a synced vault to another server from Settings, connect a This Device Only vault to a server, or start a new vault from a backup, and what each leaves behind.
- Back up your vaultSave a passphrase-encrypted backup from Settings, keep it off your Mac, and restore it into any vault. For a This Device Only vault it is the only copy that survives losing the Mac.
Recovery and security
What can and can’t be recovered, the Emergency Kit, and locking.
- Lost your master password, Secret Key or deviceWhat can and can’t be recovered, case by case, and what to do next. There is no account recovery and no password reset.
- Emergency Kit best practicesWhat the kit is, where to keep it, whether to write your master password on it, and how to make a new copy of your Secret Key.
- Locking, Touch ID and auto-lockWhen Remem locks, how to set the idle timer, how Touch ID unlock works and what it stores, and how the extension locks.
- Screen sharing, screenshots and the clipboardRemem hides its windows from screen capture and clears copied secrets. How to share your screen with Remem visible, and the limits.
- If you think your master password or Secret Key leakedRemem can’t change a master password or Secret Key. What to do instead: move to a new vault and change the passwords that matter.
Deleting
Your vault account, your website account, and Remem on a Mac.
- Delete your vault accountPermanently delete your vault and everything on the sync server, from the Mac app. What it removes, and what you still need to do on other devices.
- Delete your website accountDelete your remempass.org account: your waitlist place, invite and preferences. Your vault is separate and stays.
- Remove Remem from a MacErase the vault from a Mac and uninstall the app, the command-line tool and the extension, including what dragging the app to the Trash leaves behind.
- What each deletion removes, and how long data is keptOne page with every kind of deletion side by side, and the retention period for each kind of data we hold.
Self-hosting (advanced)
Running your own sync server.
- Run your own sync serverRun the Remem sync server with Docker and Postgres behind a TLS reverse proxy, keep it updated and back it up.
- Point the app and extension at your serverCreate a vault on your own server, connect an existing This Device Only vault to it, and connect the browser extension.
- Self-hosting security notesOpen registration, what your server can see, and how to run it safely.
