Add logins, codes and other secrets
Create items from templates, scan a 2FA QR code off your screen, generate strong passwords, and add any field you need.
Last updated
Every item starts from a template that suggests a set of fields. Whatever you pick, every field stays editable and you can add more.
Add an item
- In the Mac app, select Add (the + button at the bottom of the window).
- Under What are you saving?, pick a template.
- Fill in the fields. Use Add a field for anything the template doesn’t have.
- Select Save.
| Template | Starts with |
|---|---|
| Login | Username, Password, Website |
| One-time code | One-time code, Account, Website |
| Credit card | Cardholder, Number, Expires, Security code, PIN, Billing address |
| Secure note | Notes only |
| Identity | Full name, Email, Phone, Date of birth, Address |
| API key | Key, Service, Environment, Expires |
| SSH key | Private key, Public key, Passphrase, Comment |
| CLI profile | Variable names mapped to remem:// references, for the remem command |
| Custom | Nothing; add your own fields |
Password and one-time-code fields are hidden behind dots by default. Every item also has notes, tags and an optional picture, and you can sort items into groups on each Mac.
Add a 2FA code by scanning its QR code
When a website shows you a QR code to set up two-factor authentication, Remem can read it straight off your screen.
- Leave the site’s QR code visible on screen.
- In Remem, open the login for that site (or add a One-time code item) and go to its One-time code field. Add one with Add a field if the item doesn’t have one.
- Select Scan QR code on screen. A frame appears: “Drag this frame over the QR code, then click Scan.”
- Drag the frame over the QR code, resize it if you need to, and select Scan.
- If several codes are found, choose which one this item is for. Then Save.
- Finish setup on the website by typing in the current code Remem shows.
Each press is one capture; nothing scans in the background. Only 2FA setup codes (otpauth://) are kept. Any other QR code in the capture, such as a Wi-Fi code, is discarded before it reaches the app. Nothing is saved to disk.
You can also choose Scan an image file and pick a PNG or JPEG screenshot of the code, or paste the setup key the site shows under the QR code straight into the field. Remem accepts the bare key as well as a full otpauth:// link.
First scan: Screen Recording permission
macOS asks you to allow Remem to record the screen. If you said no, open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen Recording, switch Remem on, then quit and reopen Remem. A screenshot plus Scan an image file works without the permission.
Remem supports time-based (TOTP), counter-based (HOTP) and Steam codes. To bring many codes across at once from another authenticator app, see Import from another password manager.
Generate a strong password
The password generator has three tabs: Random (8 to 64 characters; choose letters, digits and symbols, and optionally avoid look-alike characters), Phrase (3 to 10 words from a built-in list, with optional capitals and a number) and PIN (4 to 12 digits). remem generate in the terminal goes further. The strength shown is calculated from the recipe, not guessed from the result.
Find things again
Search runs on your Mac and covers titles, tags and every field that isn’t a secret, such as usernames and websites. Secrets are never searchable. Items match about 130 bundled brand icons, fall back to initials, or use a picture you choose (PNG or JPEG up to 4 MB). Remem never fetches icons from the web.
What if…
The scan says “No QR code on screen”
Open the code the site is showing you, leave it visible, and scan again.
It says “No 2FA QR code found”
Fit the whole code inside the frame and scan again. A QR code that isn’t a 2FA setup code is ignored on purpose.
I need to attach a file or save a passkey
Remem doesn’t support attachments or passkeys. A long text, such as a recovery-codes list, fits in a Secure note.
I added a code in the browser extension
The extension’s Scan for QR code reads the code on the current tab but can’t save it to an item. It offers Copy setup link; paste that into the One-time code field in the Mac app.
