Install and use the browser extension
Install the extension in Chrome, Edge, Brave, Arc or Firefox, connect it to your vault with a pairing code, and fill logins and codes.
Last updated
The extension fills logins and 2FA codes, offers strong passwords on sign-up forms, and offers to save new logins. It needs your vault to sync through Remem Cloud or your own server; it can’t connect to a This Device Only vault.
Install in Chrome, Edge, Brave or Arc
During the alpha the extension isn’t in the browser stores. You load it from your account page, where it appears in Downloads once your invite arrives:
- Once you’re invited, on your account page, download Browser extension for Chromium and unzip it. Keep the unzipped folder somewhere permanent; the browser loads the extension from it.
- Open your browser’s extensions page (for Chrome, type
chrome://extensionsin the address bar) and switch on Developer mode. - Select Load unpacked and choose the unzipped folder.
- Pin Remem to the toolbar if you like. ⌘⇧L opens it.
It works with Chrome 110 or later and other Chromium browsers.
Install in Firefox
- Download Browser extension for Firefox from your account page.
- Open
about:debugging#/runtime/this-firefox. On that page, select Load Temporary Add-on… and choose the downloaded zip file.
Firefox forgets it on restart
While the Firefox build is unsigned, it loads as a temporary add-on, and Firefox removes it when it quits. Load it again after a restart, and connect it again.
Firefox 115 or later is required. Unlocking with Touch ID isn’t available in Firefox.
Connect it to your vault
The quickest way is a pairing code from the Mac app:
- In the Mac app, open Settings → Sync and select Pair a browser. Confirm with Touch ID or your Mac password. The code is copied to the clipboard.
- Open the extension. On Connect to your vault, paste into Desktop pairing code and select Use pairing code. It fills in the sync server, email and Secret Key.
- Select Connect, then enter your Master password on Unlock Remem and select Unlock.
Without the app nearby, fill in Sync server, Email and Secret Key from your Emergency Kit by hand instead.
A pairing code contains your Secret Key
The code is encoded, not encrypted. Paste it only into your own browser, and never send it by email or chat. Remem clears it from the clipboard on its normal timer, and the extension refuses codes older than 10 minutes.
Once connected, this browser profile keeps the Secret Key encrypted under your master password, so it doesn’t ask for it again. The extension shows up as “Browser extension” in your device list.
The extension stays with the server it was paired with. If you move your vault to another server, pair the extension again afterwards.
Fill, save and generate
- Fill: on a sign-in form, use the Remem button that appears in the field, or open the extension, where For this site lists matching logins, each with Fill (the login, and its code if it has one) and Copy (the code if it has one, otherwise the password).
- Codes: a login with a linked or included one-time code fills it too; the Codes list copies codes on their own. On a page that only asks for a code, such as a two-step sign-in, the menu under the code field lists just the items for this site that have a code, with the clock mark, and picking one fills the code alone. A linked item only lends its username or password on a site it shares with the login being filled, and an item in the Trash lends nothing.
- Save: after you sign in somewhere new, Remem asks “Save this login for <site>?”. When a password changes, it offers Update password or Save as new.
- Generate: on a new-password field, choose Use a strong password. It fills both password fields and copies the password.
- The extension’s Menu has Add password, Generate password, Scan for QR code, Sync now and Lock.
Matching is by hostname, ignoring a leading www., so login.example.com and example.com are different sites. Filling on a site that doesn’t match asks you first, once or always; “always” adds that address to the item.
Unlock with Touch ID
In Chrome, Chrome Beta, Chromium, Edge, Brave and Arc on a Mac, the extension can unlock through the Mac app: select Use Touch ID on its unlock screen. The Mac app must be installed and open, with Touch ID unlock turned on in its Settings.
When it locks
The extension locks when the browser closes and whenever you choose Lock. In Chromium browsers it also locks when your Mac’s session locks; Firefox may not notice that, so lock it yourself there. It has no idle timer of its own. Copied secrets are cleared from the clipboard after 45 seconds.
What if…
It says “No sync server is configured.”
The extension can only connect to a vault that syncs. If yours is This Device Only, connect it to a server first.
“Open Remem on this Mac to use Touch ID.”
Open the Mac app, make sure Touch ID unlock is on in its Settings → Unlocking, and try again. Or unlock with your master password.
The extension doesn’t offer my login
Check the item’s Website field has the host you sign in at, including any subdomain (a leading www. is ignored). Then select Sync now in the extension’s menu.
I can’t find Pair a browser in Settings
It only appears when the app is connected to a sync server.
I want to use Safari
There is no Safari build to download during the alpha.
