Favourites, groups, history and the Trash
Keep a large vault tidy, get back an old password, and understand what deleting an item does.
Last updated
Remem holds one vault per account. Within it you can star items, sort them into groups, and change the order they appear in.
Favourites
Open an item and select the star (Star in the editor). Starred items appear under Favourites in the sidebar, and they come first in the quick panel. Select the star again to undo it.
Groups
Groups sort your lists on this Mac. Create one with New group in the Organize menu, or right-click an item and use Organize · move to; an item can be in one group or in none (No group). Organize also switches between Custom order (drag items to reorder them), Name A–Z and Recently used.
Groups stay on this Mac
Groups are kept on the Mac where you made them. They don’t sync to your other devices, and they aren’t in exports or encrypted backups. Collections in the sidebar are different: they are folders that came in with an import.
Get back an earlier value
When you change a field, whether in the Mac app’s editor, with the browser extension’s Update password or with remem item edit, Remem keeps the earlier value under Password history on that item. Removing a field keeps its last value there too. Up to 50 earlier values are kept per item; past that, the oldest are dropped. A new item starts with no history, and the history and dates always come from the copy in your vault, not from what was on screen. History is included in an encrypted backup and a JSON export, but not in a CSV export.
The Trash
- Move to Trash on an item hides it from your lists. Nothing is lost yet.
- Open Trash in the sidebar and right-click an item to Restore it, or to Delete permanently.
- Empty Trash permanently deletes everything in it. Remem never empties the Trash on its own.
A permanently deleted item is wiped: its title, fields, notes and history are cleared, and only a marker remains so your other devices learn it was deleted. Devices drop that marker after 30 days.
What if…
An item called “(conflicted copy)” appeared
You changed the same item on two devices while one of them was offline. Remem keeps the latest change and saves the other as “<title> (conflicted copy)” rather than throwing it away. Compare the two, keep what you want, and move the other to the Trash.
I want separate vaults for work and home
Each account has one vault, named Personal, and nothing can be shared with another person. Use groups and tags to separate things.
