Sync isn’t working
Read the sync status, fix an expired session or a removed device, and understand conflicts, limits and server addresses.
Last updated
Sync runs only while the vault is unlocked. A Mac sends a change about 2 seconds after you make it, and within 30 seconds even while you keep editing, and your other Macs hear about it straight away over a live connection; each Mac also checks every 5 minutes. Copying or using an item doesn’t count as a change. The browser extension has no live connection: it sends its own changes, checks every 5 minutes, and syncs at once when you select Sync now.
Check the status
Open Settings → Sync. Under the server address you see one of:
- Synced just now. or Synced 3 min ago. Everything is working.
- Not synced yet. The device hasn’t completed a sync since it connected.
- Not syncing. This vault has no server (This Device Only).
- Finishing with the old server… A change of server is reading the old server one last time before uploading.
- Uploading 12 items… Items are on their way up, for example after you changed server.
- 12 items not on this server yet. The next sync uploads them. An upload was interrupted; it carries on at the next sync.
- Couldn’t check what is left to upload. Remem couldn’t count what is still to send. Select Sync now.
- An error message. See below.
Select Sync now to try straight away. When the connection needs to be re-established, the button beside the address reads Reconnect.
Common problems
“The sync session expired.”
Sync sessions last 30 days. Select Sync now: while the vault is unlocked, Remem signs in again by itself.
The device locked on its own and stopped syncing
It was probably removed from your device list on another device. Unlock it with your master password and it signs in again. If you didn’t remove it, see If you think your master password or Secret Key leaked.
A change on one Mac doesn’t show on the other
Both must be unlocked to sync. Unlock the second one, or select Sync now on each. In the extension, use Sync now in its menu.
An item called “(conflicted copy)” appeared
The same item was changed on two devices while one was offline. Remem keeps both. Compare them and move the one you don’t want to the Trash.
“This server would not store one item…”
The server refused the items listed under the message, usually because one is too large: each item can be up to about 1 MB once encrypted, which a very large picture or note can exceed. The items stay on your Mac. Make the item smaller and save it; it is sent again when it changes.
I changed server and another Mac doesn’t see new changes
Each device moves separately. Until you use Change server on the other Mac too, it keeps syncing with the old server. The browser extension has to be paired again. See Move to another server or storage mode.
“Remem couldn’t check <server> for changes before moving…” or “Remem stopped checking <server>…”
The old server couldn’t be reached during a move, or answered too slowly for two minutes. An item deleted long ago on another device may reappear on the new server; if one does, delete it again. Select Dismiss beside the message once you’ve checked.
It asks for an invite code
“This server needs an invite code to add your account.” appears when you connect or move a vault to Remem Cloud for the first time. Remem Cloud only creates accounts with an invite.
Self-hosted servers
- The address must start with
https://. Plainhttp://is only accepted forlocalhost. - If changes only arrive every few minutes, your reverse proxy probably isn’t passing WebSocket upgrades on
/ws. - Check the server answers on its health endpoint:
curl https://sync.example.com/healthStill stuck
Write to hello@remempass.org with the error message, your Remem version (Settings → About) and whether you use Remem Cloud or your own server. Never include your master password, Secret Key or a pairing code.
