Troubleshooting
Fixes for the messages and problems people run into most, in the app, the extension and the terminal.

The Mac app
macOS says Remem can’t be opened
The build isn’t notarized yet. Use System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway, or, if macOS says the app “is damaged”, clear the download flag with xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Remem.app; see Install the Mac app.
“That did not unlock the vault.”
The master password was wrong. Check Caps Lock and your keyboard layout. There is no reset; see Lost your master password.
There is no Touch ID button on the lock screen
Touch ID unlock is off until you turn it on in Settings → Unlocking. On a Mac without Touch ID, the option is called Unlock with your password, and it uses your Mac’s login password.
“Remem needs Screen Recording permission to read a QR code off the screen.”
Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen Recording, switch Remem on, then quit and reopen Remem. Or take a screenshot and use Scan an image file.
The vault locks while I’m using it
The idle timer counts only what you do in Remem, not what you do in other apps. Choose a longer time in Settings → Locking → Lock the vault when idle.
The vault never locks by itself
Check Lock the vault when idle isn’t set to Never on idle. Remem can’t tell when you lock your Mac’s screen, so with that setting the vault stays open until you lock it yourself or the Mac sleeps. See Locking, Touch ID and auto-lock.
Remem is blank in my screen share
That is deliberate. See Screen sharing, screenshots and the clipboard.
I can’t find my export or backup
Both go to your Downloads folder: exports named remem-export- followed by the date, backups remem-backup- followed by the date. A second file the same day gets “ (2)” added rather than replacing the first.
“That passphrase does not open this backup, or the file has been changed since it was made.”
Check the backup passphrase word by word. There is no other way in: see Back up your vault.
Back up… or Export is greyed out
Saving a backup or an export needs Touch ID or your Mac password. Where a device has no system identity check, Settings says so under each card: “…needs a system identity check, and this device has none Remem can use yet…”. Restoring a backup still works there.
The browser extension
“No sync server is configured.”
The extension needs a vault that syncs. A This Device Only vault can’t use it.
“That pairing code is not valid.” or “…is incomplete.”
Pairing codes expire after 10 minutes and are cleared from the clipboard after 45 seconds by default. Make a new one in Settings → Sync → Pair a browser and paste it straight away.
“Open Remem on this Mac to use Touch ID.”
The Mac app must be open, with Touch ID unlock on. Touch ID isn’t available in Firefox.
Remem disappeared from Firefox
The Firefox build loads as a temporary add-on and is removed when Firefox quits. Load it again from about:debugging.
It doesn’t offer to fill on a site
Make sure the item’s Website field has the same host you sign in at, including any subdomain (a leading www. is ignored), and the extension is unlocked and synced.
The remem command
command not found: remem
~/.local/bin isn’t on your PATH. Add export PATH="$HOME/.local/bin:$PATH" to ~/.zshrc and open a new Terminal window.
Exit code 6, no agent
Open the Mac app, or run remem agent in another terminal. remem status shows whether an agent is reachable and the vault is open.
Exit code 3, locked
Unlock the vault and try again.
Exit code 4, denied
The request was refused at the prompt, or the prompt was dismissed. A changed .remem.toml also asks again; run remem trust to approve it.
Exit code 5, not found
Check the reference with Copy CLI reference in the app. An ambiguous name is refused rather than guessed.
SSH says the agent refused to sign with my RSA key
Remem signs with RSA only using rsa-sha2-512. Use an Ed25519 key where you can.
