Install the Mac app
Download Remem for macOS from your account page, open it for the first time, and add the remem command if you want it.

Remem for macOS is a single download that runs on Apple silicon and Intel Macs with macOS 11 or later. The same disk image carries the remem command.
Download and install
- Sign in at remempass.org and open your account page. Until your invite arrives, the Downloads section says the Mac app and the browser extension will appear there; once you are invited, they do.
- Select Download next to Remem for macOS.
- Optional: check the file. The page shows a SHA-256 for every download. In Terminal, run the command below and compare the result with the page.
- Open the downloaded
.dmgand drag Remem onto the Applications folder beside it. - Open Remem from Applications. It starts with the Set up Remem screen; continue with creating your vault.
shasum -a 256 ~/Downloads/Remem-*.dmgIf macOS won’t open it
Alpha builds are not always notarized by Apple. When one isn’t, the download list says not notarized yet, and macOS refuses to open the app the first time. To open it anyway:
- Try to open Remem once, and close the warning.
- Open System Settings → Privacy & Security.
- Scroll down to the message about Remem and select Open Anyway, then confirm with your Mac password or Touch ID.
On macOS versions before 15 you can also Control-click Remem in Applications and choose Open. Only do this for a file you downloaded from your own account page; if in doubt, compare the SHA-256 first.
If macOS says Remem “is damaged and can’t be opened”, there is no Open Anyway button: an alpha build that isn’t signed with an Apple Developer ID is refused that way once it has been downloaded. After checking the SHA-256 against your account page, clear the download flag in Terminal, then open Remem as usual:
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Remem.app
In such a build, Touch ID unlock may not work, because the permissions it needs are only granted to a signed app. Unlock with your master password; everything else works.
Add the remem command (optional)
- In the open disk image, double-click Install remem command. If macOS blocks it, use Open Anyway as above.
- It copies
rememto~/.local/bin, which needs no administrator password. - If it says that folder is not on your PATH, add the line below to
~/.zshrcand open a new Terminal window. - Run
remem statusto check it can reach the app.
export PATH="$HOME/.local/bin:$PATH"Your account page also offers the remem tool as a separate download. See the remem command-line tool.
What if…
There is nothing to download
The section reads “No builds yet” when no build has been published. We email invited people when there is one.
My Mac runs macOS 10.15 or earlier
Remem needs macOS 11 or later.
I use Windows or Linux
There is no Windows or Linux build to download during the alpha.
I want to update to a newer build
Download the new build from your account page and drag it to Applications, replacing the old one. Your vault lives in your user data folder and your Keychain, not inside the app, so replacing the app leaves it in place.
