Set up a second device
Add another Mac to a vault that syncs through Remem Cloud or your own server, using your Emergency Kit and master password.
Last updated
A second Mac joins your vault with three things: your email, your master password and your Secret Key from the Emergency Kit. Nothing has to be approved on your first device.
Before you start
- Your vault must sync through Remem Cloud or your own server. A This Device Only vault can’t be added to a second device; connect it to a server first.
- Have your Emergency Kit to hand, and know your sync server’s address if you host your own.
- Install Remem on the new Mac.
Add the device
- Open Remem on the new Mac. On Set up Remem, select I already have an account. You see Add this device.
- Under Sync cloud, choose Remem Cloud (sync.remempass.org), or your own server and enter its address in Sync server.
- Enter your Email, your Master password, and the Secret Key from your Emergency Kit. Dashes, spaces and capital letters don’t matter.
- Select Add this device.
- The vault opens locked. Unlock it once with your master password. Your items download.
You don’t need an invite code to add a device; the invite was only for creating the account.
Using a pairing code instead
At the top of Add this device, Pairing code (optional) takes a code from another device and fills in the server, email and Secret Key (Use pairing code). Codes come from Settings → Sync → Pair a browser, are copied to the clipboard and expire after 10 minutes. They are designed for a browser on the same Mac; for another Mac, typing from your Emergency Kit is usually simpler.
Don’t send a pairing code over email or chat
It contains your Secret Key, encoded but not encrypted.
What if…
It doesn’t accept my details
Check the server is the same one your first device uses, and that the email is exactly the one you signed up with. The example in the Secret Key box is only a hint; type the key exactly as your kit shows it, in the form A3-XXXXXX-XXXXXX-XXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX.
I lost my Emergency Kit but my first Mac still works
Your first Mac still holds the Secret Key. See “Lost your kit but still have a working device” in Emergency Kit best practices.
I created my vault with a phone number or username
That vault can’t sync, so it can’t be added to another device. To use it on more than one device, start a new vault with an email address and bring your items across from an encrypted backup.
I replaced my old Mac
Add the new one as above, then remove the old one from your device list. If you still have the old Mac, use Remove vault from this device on it before you sell or recycle it.
