The product
How much does Remem cost?
Remem is free during the alpha.
Which platforms can I use?
Macs with macOS 11 or later, Chromium browsers (Chrome 110 or later, Edge, Brave, Arc and others) and Firefox 115 or later, and the remem command on macOS. There is no Windows, Linux, iPhone, Android or Safari build to download, and no web vault.
Can I share items with my family or team?
No. Each account has one vault, for one person.
Does Remem support passkeys or file attachments?
No. Neither is built.
Does Remem check my passwords against breaches?
No, deliberately: nothing from your vault is sent over the network for any lookup. The Security review checks for weak, reused and old passwords on your Mac.
Does Remem fetch website icons?
No. Icons come from a set bundled with the app, or a picture you choose.
Is Remem open source?
Remem is licensed under AGPL-3.0-or-later. The source code isn’t public yet during the private alpha.
Your account and security
Can you reset my master password?
No. Nobody can, including us. See what is and isn’t recoverable.
Can I change my master password?
No, there is no way to change it. If you need a new one, move to a new vault.
Why do I need both a master password and a Secret Key?
The Secret Key is 128 random bits that never leave your devices. Even if someone stole a copy of the server’s data, they couldn’t try to guess your master password without it.
Do new devices need to be approved?
No. Anyone with your email, master password and Secret Key can add a device, which is why the Emergency Kit needs to be kept safe. Removing a device signs it out.
Can I remotely wipe a lost Mac?
No. Removing it signs it out; its copy stays encrypted on it. See Remove a device.
Your data
Where is my data stored?
Remem Cloud’s storage is set up in Cloudflare’s EU jurisdiction. See Where your data is stored.
Can I use Remem without the cloud?
Yes, with This Device Only, at the cost of the extension and a second device. Keep an encrypted backup somewhere else, because nothing is backed up automatically. See Choose where your vault lives.
Can I sync with iCloud or Dropbox?
No. Use Remem Cloud or your own server. You can keep an encrypted backup file there, but it is a copy you make by hand, not sync.
What happens if Remem Cloud shuts down?
Our terms promise at least 30 days’ email notice before a shutdown. In that time, use Change server to move to your own server, or start a This Device Only vault from an encrypted backup.
Can I leave and take my data with me?
Yes. Export a CSV, a common format other password managers import, or a JSON export that another Remem vault brings back whole. Then delete your vault account.
